Xiaomi Mijia Electric Scooter 1S: A high-end toy for young people

Some time ago, the new Mijia electric scooter 1S was launched on Xiaomi mall. It is not difficult to see from the naming that there will not be much difference from the 1st generation. It happened that a friend bought one and borrowed it for a week. Combine and compare the feelings of the previous generation, and share with you the 1S experience.

Overall appearance

The exterior design is still the consistent style of Mijia products, simple and generous. Installation after unpacking is not difficult. Press the front joint into the car body and screw in the screws according to the sequence; press and hold the power on, you can connect to the Mijia APP for use. The overall appearance still continues the simple design praised by the previous generation, with two colors of black and white. The design uses red elements to cleverly accentuate the original solid-color body, which is quite a finishing touch.

The net weight of 1S is 12.5kg, the body is made of aviation-grade aluminum alloy, and the load can reach 100Kg. Usually users can store it by opening the folding buckle.

Compared with the first generation

Let me talk about the big changes in appearance. 1S added a visual digital dial for the first time. You can see the digital display of the real-time speed when driving; in the charging mode, the display area is the battery percentage. Before 1S is on the shelves, the design is exclusive to the Pro version.

In addition, 1S has some optimizations in appearance design. For example, the 1S charging protective cover has been changed from a first-generation snap-on type to a magnetic suction type, which makes the operation easier; the bell part has replaced the color matching, and the sound is more crisp; the 1S front light will be brighter. In addition, the 1S body weight, height, battery life, peak speed, charging power and other parameters are consistent with the first generation.

Then let’s talk about the battery life that everyone is most concerned about. Both 1 and 1S have a range of 30km. However, due to differences in road conditions and ambient temperature, it is difficult to achieve this endurance standard at full speed. In addition, due to the irreversible chemical decay of the lithium battery, the battery life of the scooter will be reduced after a certain number of charging. When using the 1st generation, the accumulated mileage exceeds 1,000 kilometers in nearly half a year of riding time. Although the total mileage has decreased, it can still perfectly meet the mileage demand for commuting. If there is a high endurance mileage requirement, such as more than 10 kilometers one-way, it is recommended to buy the Pro version with longer endurance. The top speed is the same as the standard version, but the price is a heavier body.

There is no difference between the top speed of the 1S and the 1st generation, both can reach 25km/h. This is consistent with the speed limit of Chinese electric bicycles, which is about 6 times the speed of walking (calculated according to the speed of walking 1m/s). But the 1st generation only supports energy-saving mode (speed limit 8km/h); while 1S supports standard mode 20km/h, sports mode 25km/h, and ECO mode 15km/h. If it is predicted that the remaining power of the scooter cannot meet the demand for returning home, it is recommended to turn on the energy-saving mode. At this time, the scooter will increase the proportion of electricity recovery, and limit the speed to a certain lower range, which can ensure a longer battery life. The other two generations of scooters support fixed-speed cruise (need to be manually turned on in the Mijia APP or independent APP, and novices are not recommended to turn on).

It is worth noting that there are certain differences in the safety strategies of the two generations of scooters. For example, 1S will always have a prompt sound when the vehicle is not activated (Bluetooth bound mobile phone), and it is a prompt sound that affects daily use. It will force you to choose to bind Mijia APP or standalone APP. When binding the app for the first time, both generations of scooters will force users to watch the safety tutorial prompt video for about 2 minutes (cannot be skipped).

In addition, both 1 and 1S support APP one-key lock car. Neither car can be forced to shut down when the car has just been locked. If you push the scooter forcibly, there will be an electronic braking effect and an alarm sound. However, the first generation will automatically shut down after being locked for a period of time. At this time, manually turning on the car is not the state of locking the car; 1S seems to have changed this strategy. After locking the car on the APP side, the scooter is still turned on and locked for more than 3 hours. The status of the car, and there is a separately designed dial to display. Although the latter seems to be safer, it is not recommended to park temporarily outdoors. Because of the weight of 12.5kg, both men and women can easily lift it; putting the trunk of the car in the folded state is even more effortless.

Experience

Before use, you need to watch the video and wear protective equipment, such as knee pads, elbow pads, and helmets. After setting up various settings in the Mijia APP, you are ready to go.

Here are a few questions:

One is that riding a scooter needs to master balance. It is not recommended for those who do not know how to ride a bicycle or other two-wheeled vehicles to ride an electric scooter rashly, because sudden acceleration can easily make you lose your balance and fall.

The second is a more intimate design based on the above problems. The scooter needs a basic initial speed to press and hold the switch to accelerate; at the same time, if the power recovery device is turned on, many times (such as intersections, etc.) do not need to brake, just release the switch to slowly slow down and make a turn. In this way, falling accidents caused by sudden acceleration and deceleration can be reduced.

Talk about the riding feeling of 1S. First of all, it is quite smooth on the asphalt road, but because the body itself does not have any shock absorbers, there are bumps under certain circumstances. This is not a question that needs to be avoided. By default, the maximum speed of 1S is 20km/h. You can set the eco or sports mode in the APP to adjust the maximum speed to the corresponding 15/25km/h. I mentioned the situation of electric energy recovery above, and I personally do not recommend sudden braking except for special circumstances (such as sudden pedestrians, etc.). Because the brakes are still relatively urgent, beginners can easily lose their balance if they brake quickly. Press the switch in the normal mode, the screen can display the corresponding speed at that time in real time.

In terms of usage scenarios, there are actually some problems. First, each city has different traffic regulations. I don’t know whether each city can allow such non-motorized vehicles on the road. The second is that this car is more troublesome to lock. Although the APP can set a password and lock it with one key, the weight of 12.5kg has also become a double-edged sword in some sense and can be easily taken away by others. The current situation of such tools is rather embarrassing. They are generally suitable for short commute to and from get off work, shopping in nearby malls or playing in the park. It is also important to make sure that there is a place for the car to park and not to be taken away.

Let me add the advantages of the scooter over the balance car. The balance bike has higher requirements for users’ riding skills and is more difficult to get started; and the two-wheel design has a larger cross-section, which is not suitable for high-density traffic in non-motorized lanes during peak periods. And in an emergency, the braking distance is longer than that of a scooter, and the risk is slightly higher. The riding skills of a scooter are closer to that of an electric bicycle, but the former requires the user to provide a run-up. Officials also provide seats and other accessories, and the effect after installation is actually the same as that of an electric bicycle.

Conclusion

In general, if there is a demand for short-distance transportation, and usually face the problem of peak traffic jams, the commuting efficiency of Mijia electric scooters will affect all means of transportation. In addition, if most of the road conditions in your city are good, and there will be non-motorized lanes; the road is straight and the field of view is wide, and the riding experience is very comfortable in a suitable temperature environment. Moreover, the weight of the body is moderate, which can be easily carried by men and women, and it can also be perfectly placed in the trunk of the car after folding. As for the problem of getting on the road, please strictly abide by the traffic regulations and never get on the motorway. As for the purchase, please consider your actual situation.
